Rep. Shekarchi to chair House Labor Committee
STATE HOUSE – Rep. K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) has been named Chairman of the House Committee on Labor for the remainder of the 2013-14 legislative session.
The appointment was announced this week by Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello, who said that “Joe Shekarchi will do an excellent job as chair of this committee because of his many years of outstanding legal work, knowledge of our labor laws and continuing commitment to public service, which began years ago in his home community of Warwick.”
Representative Shekarchi, who is serving his first term in the House, has been a member of the Labor Committee since his inauguration in January, 2013. He has also been a member of the House Committee on Judiciary, a position he will retain.
The Committee on Labor is one of several standing committees of the House of Representatives and deliberates legislation regarding workers’ compensation and labor laws.
Representative Shekarchi is an attorney who serves as legal counsel for the Warwick Housing Authority and also served as the Warwick City Solicitor.
In addition to his regular legislative duties, he is also the a member of a special legislative commission created to study Rhode Island’s zoning and subdivision enabling acts and was also named to a Warwick study committee reviewing tax exempt properties in that community.
